Statutory regulations require Automotive LPG cylinders to be inspected and tested every 10 years to ensure they are in a safe working condition.
What are my obligations regarding periodic inspections of Automotive LP Gas Cylinders?
Under Australian Standard AS1425, when your Automotive LP Gas cylinder reaches 10 years since the last test date, it is considered to be an out of date cylinder requiring retesting and certification by an Authorized Gas Cylinder Test Station.
The test date stamp on your cylinder is normally located on the flange pad or an attached cylinder plate, indicating the date on which the tanks were last inspected.
Authorised LPG examiners will check this date at the time of inspection for renewal of registration. For example, if the LPG system was installed in January 2010, the tank/s will need to be re-tested in January 2020.
The LP Gas cylinder Inspection and Re-certification process entails:
- Checking for the cylinder test date on the tank
- Decanting the remaining gas in the cylinder to leave it empty
- Removing the gas tank and associated fittings from the vehicle
- Inspecting the cylinder externally
- Removing the cylinder valves and fittings
- Inspecting the cylinder internally
- Inspecting and cleaning the valve threads and sealing surfaces
- Testing valves and fitting new parts as required (pressure relief, flange seals & screws)
- Pressure leak testing of the cylinder at 2.3Mpa
- Stamping the cylinder with the test date
- Reinstalling the cylinder and checking for leaks
- Issuing a Gas Cylinder Test Report
Automotive LPG cylinder testing must be carried out using specialised equipment.

* Unfortunately over the last 10-15 years there have been a number of unscrupulous operators engaging in Automotive LPG cylinder retests in NSW and charging prices as low as $60. We have been called upon on several occasions since starting to fix up cheaply retested automotive gas tanks; sometimes within a week of cheap testing, and other times after a few months have passed. We have found a variety of errors including: worn out valves, broken automatic fill limiter valves, stripped flange threads, broken flange screws, leaking service taps, uncleaned and improperly sealed cylinder threads, broken or split brass / copper fittings, cracked and damaged service line fittings, twisted hoses and even a handful of rusted out LPG cylinders that were improperly passed.
